Scripture In The Bible About Marriage

Scripture In The Bible About Marriage

Marriage is a covenant between two people who love each other. It is often called “the greatest of human relationships” and the foundation of a family. Marriage has been in existence since the beginning of time, and God gave us the example of Adam and Eve to show us how it should be done. The Bible contains many verses about marriage (and others about family life) that will help guide you through your relationship with your spouse or significant other.

1. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12

The Bible teaches that marriage is a sacred union. The Hebrew word translated as “marry” in the New Testament means “to join together” or “to unite.” A cord of three strands is not quickly broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12). This verse, among others, emphasizes the importance of unity in marriage—a unity that includes communication between husband and wife, trust between husband and wife, forgiveness between husband and wife and love between husband and wife.

2. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:25

In the first chapter of Genesis, we see that God created Adam and Eve. Their bodies were naked, but they were not ashamed. This was because they were naked, or because they weren’t ashamed. Either way, it’s clear that there was no shame in their relationship with God (the only thing Adam and Eve felt shame about was hiding from Him).

3. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her Ephesians 5:25

  • Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her Ephesians 5:25

Just as Christ loves the church and gives himself up for her, so should a husband love his wife in that same way. Husbands are called to love their wives unconditionally and sacrificially like Christ does for us. This means sacrificing your own needs for the sake of meeting hers. It doesn’t mean you must do everything she wants or everything you don’t want to do; rather it means doing what is best for your marriage (and therefore best for both of you).

4. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Matthew 19:5-6

Given the importance of the family unit, and the relationship between husband and wife in that unit, it is not surprising that God wants us to treasure these relationships. In fact, He commands us to do so.

But what does it mean for a man to “leave” his parents? It means he no longer lives under their authority. The father represents authority; when you leave your father’s house (or another’s who exercises parental control over you), he no longer has any authority over you. With this basic meaning in mind, we can now look at how this applies to marriage.

5. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 1 Corinthians 7:5

The key here is to make sure you’re not depriving your spouse of anything that is important to them. For example, don’t deprive each other of sex by having it less than once a week (you can probably guess what the Bible says about this). Don’t deprive each other of time together by spending too much time at work or on Facebook. Don’t deprive each other of attention and affection because you’re busy working or doing something else that doesn’t involve your spouse.

Don’t also deprive each other of communication by ignoring them when they talk to you or making fun of their unique interests.

6. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

  • Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Love will always be patient with you and your spouse’s shortcomings and mistakes, because that’s what love does—it forgives! Your spouse may make a mistake while getting ready for work one morning or by forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning on their way home from work one day. Don’t let these small things get under your skin; instead focus on how much God loves you (1 John 4:19).

7. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

You should also be careful about the things you think about, say, do, read, watch and listen to. Your thoughts will determine your feelings which will determine your actions. If you think negatively about something or someone it will affect your attitude and behavior towards them. The Bible says: “As a man thinks in his heart so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

So instead of thinking negatively about yourself or others try thinking positively about what you are going through in life. This positive attitude can help you make better decisions and have happier relationships with others!

The Scriptures are full of biblical marriage quotes and verses that can help you to understand what God’s view on marriage is. Marriage is a sacred union between two people who love one another, as well as a picture of Christ’s love for his church. Marriage takes work but it can be an amazing blessing from God if we honor him by making our marriages the best they can possibly be!
