How Many Books In The Bible Catholic

A common question that comes up when talking about the Bible is “how many books are in the Bible?” The answer to this question varies depending on which religion you belong to. For example, Protestants only recognize 66 books as part of their canon while Catholics recognize 73 and Orthodox Christians also have an additional 3 books in their canon. Press Tab to write more…

The list has 39 books in it.

The Catholic Bible contains 39 books, just like the Protestant Bible. The difference is that the Catholic Church added 7 additional books to its canon, while Protestants rejected those seven books as well as three other Old Testament texts (1 & 2 Esdras and Tobit).

The following are the 39 books of Scripture that are included in both the Old and New Testaments:

  • Genesis
  • Exodus
  • Leviticus
  • Numbers
  • Deuteronomy
  • Joshua
  • Judges
  • Ruth

There are 7 more books in the Catholic Bible than the Protestant Bible: Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch.

There are 7 more books in the Catholic Bible than the Protestant Bible: Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch. They are referred to as the Deuterocanonical books or Apocrypha.

The Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church each have different canons (the list of books that belong in their Bibles). In addition to these 7 extra books for Catholics there are 7 missing from Protestants: 1 Esdras 3 Ezra 4 Ezra Prayer of Manasseh Susanna Bel & The Dragon 2 Esdras

These additional books are referred to as the Deuterocanonical books or Apocrypha.

There are a few other books that the Roman Catholic Church includes in its canon that are not accepted by most protestants. These additional books are referred to as the Deuterocanonical books or Apocrypha. The term “Apocrypha” comes from the Greek word meaning “hidden,” which is considered derogatory by some religious groups because it implies that these books were not included in the Bible because they were deemed less important than others.

However, there is no official name for these books and you may see them referred to by many different names such as:

  • Deuterocanonical Books
  • Jewish Apocrypha
  • Pseudepigrapha

The Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church each have different canons.

The Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Churches each have their own canon. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church follows the Alexandrian Canon and has a few extra books that are not found in other Christian canons, including 3 books of Maccabees, Baruch, Letter of Jeremiah (Yirmiyahu), Susanna and Bel and the Dragon. The Orthodox Churches have longer canons than Protestant communities; however, they do not include several books that are considered canonical by Protestants (see Apocrypha).

The Protestant canon includes 66 books while the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Bible includes 73 books.

There are also some Orthodox churches that use the Ethiopian Orthodox canon which is larger than any other group.

There are also some Orthodox churches that use the Ethiopian Orthodox canon which is larger than any other group. The Ethiopian Orthodox canon includes 3 additional books: Enoch, Jubilees and the Book of Giants.

This is different from most other groups because it has a different order of books in its Old Testament as well as including additional texts not found in any other Christian tradition. In this respect, the Ethiopian Orthodox canon is identical to that used by Jews today since they do not recognize any additional books beyond those found in Protestants or Catholics (or those included with Muslims).

The Wikipedia article on the Bible is a good place to start, but it should be taken with a grain of salt. Wikipedia is not always reliable as an encyclopedic source. It is a free encyclopedia that can be edited by anyone and everyone, so it may contain errors or biases that don’t reflect factual reality. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it! If you are writing an academic paper or thesis on any topic related to the Bible, please do not cite Wikipedia as your primary source (unless you’re citing other people who have cited it). The best way to avoid accidentally citing inaccurate information is by getting into the habit of double-checking all facts before including them in any document intended for publication or distribution.

The Catholic canon is longer than Protestant canons by about the length of one book of the Bible

The Catholic canon is longer than the Protestant canon by about the length of one book of the Bible.

This is due to two main factors:

  • The inclusion of seven additional books in the Jewish canon known as Maccabees, which Protestants reject.
  • The placement of three additional books after 2 Esdras (and before 3 Esdras) in some manuscripts and editions (Tobit, Judith and 1/2 of Esther).

So, there you have it! The Catholic canon is longer than the Protestant canon. It has an extra 7 books in it and they are referred to as either Deuterocanonical or Apocryphal depending on who you ask. We hope that this article has been helpful and informative
